Fort Stevenson D.T. Dec. 24" 1868 Dear Mother: I am very glad to know that I am to have the company of yourself and Mary for tomorrow. I think you look real nice and slick in of view of the fact that you have just completed a long journey of about 1800 miles, but I must confess that I'll have to show Mary into the other room that she can comb her hair. I'm real glad to see her though. She looks just as if she was awful cute or thought she was. I guess we'll have a nice time tomorrow don't you. How do you like the country, the fort and the officers. You've been here 10 days already and I haven't heard you say a word about it yet. I think the plan for the children's education is the best that can be devised; to move to a College town where both James and Mary can have first class advantages. In fact it is much much better than to try to give James a college education and you and Mary live in Conneaut, or to send James to a College, Mary to a seminary and you live in Conneaut. The expense
