May, SUNDAY 15, 1864 Got up in the morning about daylight and got breakfast. The fight recommensed this AM at about 10 o'clock (between the artillery) in a short time the Infantry opened fire. Formed line of battle about 11 'clock AM. About 11 o'clock the Bullets fell like hail-stone. after about 20 minutes fireing the Rebs seemed to be on the retreat and the 34th. made a charge on them but fell back to our old line. whe[re] we made a stand. Finding ourselves alone on the field we retreated: fireing as we went with a loss of 225 killed wounded and missing. [Co. K.?] lost in killed wounded and missing. [&c?] MONDAY 16, Marched all night Last night and at daylight we stopped about 2 miles from Woodstock and took breakfast and rested. At about 10 o'clock AM we commensed our march and at night we camped [?] on a field near Cedar Creek. Got orders to cross the Creek but the order was countermanded. A C Carty died from the affects of a wound received on the 15th.. TUESDAY 17. Got up this morning and got breakfast. After breakfast we marched down to Ce[?]dar Creek and crossed on the bridge and marched up to our old camp in the cedars which we left on the 11th. inst. Spent the day in [scowering?] guns. Col George D Wells Addressed the regiment in dress-parade. Gave his reasons for being so severe with us; said that "a soldier was a machine and that sombody run him and that he run us. He said his theory was to make the best of everything and to make himself as comfortable as he could under the circumstances. He said when he reflected on the [transactions?] of [the men?] he felt [assured?] but that he [could stand?] by the side of Grant and [?
