May, TUESDAY 24, 1864 Left camp this morning at 8 o'clock am and went to Fisher Hill to do picket duty About 10 o'clock we were ordered to go back to camp to get our knapsacks and take out what things we wanted and to send what we wanted to back to Camp Cobb at Martinsburg. When we returned to our Picket post it was past M. Had a long talk with old mr Fisher. from whom Fisher Hill takes its name. He said he had lived at his present place since 1813 and was by trade a miller and that he was in the of 1812 (but that millers were exempt in those days. Pretty warm in the AM. But in PM there was some thunder and at dark some sharp lightning. With a shower. WEDNESDAY 25. Releived of picket by some of the 2 Virginia. On quarter ration of hard bread but full rations of coffee and sugar and fresh beef. Wrote a letter to Mr. Henry A Walker informing him of the death of his son who was shot the 15th. inst in an engagement between the US forces and the rebels near New - Market Va. A hard shower took place about dark this evening with some sharp lightning and hard thunder. THURSDAY 26. Drew 10 days rations of coffee and sugar this morning with orders to get in readiness to march at 10 1/2 o'clock. At about 9 o'clock an 45 minutes Corporal Blanchard of Co H was accidentally shot through the head by a musket ball. the musket was in the hands of Private [Hubb?] of Co H. Camped to-night on a field about a mile northeast of Woodstock.
