June, SUNDAY 5, 1864 Got up this morning at 3 o'clock and at about 5 we marched in line of battle on the rebels the artillery dueling commensed at about 9 o'clock AM. Soon the infantry commensed the 1 Brigade taking the right and the 2 the left. At about 2 o'clock PM the rebs seemed to be turning our right when a part of the 2 brigade were ordered to their support. At about 3 o'clock PM a desperate fight took place between the rebs and 2 virginia Regts the rebs were severely beaten and driven out of the woods leaving their dead and wounded in our possession. About 11 o'clock our band struck up and played Yankey Doodle, and Dixie land when the rebs struck up their Bonny Blue flag one of which flags we captured with their single star on it MONDAY 6. Commensed our march from New Hope on Stanton this morning. The 34th. acted as rear guard. About M our forces marched into Stanton without oposition. About 2 o'clock PM news came to the rear that our forces was in possession of Stanton and loud.cheering echowed along our lines. About 5 o'clock the rear came up and marched into Stanton under a hard shower and while the band was playing "Yankey Doodle", "Dixie Land," Rally round the Flag boys" &c. The women looked asthough they had been crying [for?] a week. At night we camped on a field about a mile west of Stanton. TUESDAY 7. This morning Mudwall Jacksons force was reported to be near to us and the command started in pursuit of him; Followed him about 4 miles and then returned to Stanton. The government buildings in Stanton burned this morning and also some of the RR.
