June, SATURDAY 11, 1864 Got up this morning and marched on Lexington in three columns: Quite a rich country abounding in springs and brooks. About M artillery fireing heard in the direction of Lexington; at which time the bridge was burned. At 2 o'clock the command stoped to lay the pontoon. As I sit writing our batteries are shelling the woods, Soon Brooks command crossed the pontoon. At night the first brigade went into camp in the woods a short distance from the River. 15 men from Co K detailed for picket. Received a large mail this evening. The rebs driven out of the Town this P.M. SUNDAY 12. Returned to camp this morning at the time revelie sounded. Baked some buiscuit this morning for breakfast. The burning of buildings going on in Lexington. among those burned was the military Acadime and Arcinal. Ordered to pack up and get in readiness to move at 10 o'clock. About 4 P.M. we crossed the North Branch of the James RR on the ruins of the bridge burned on the 11th inst. Driew rations of Coffee and sugar about 11 o'clock this evening: MONDAY 13. Made a visit to the ruins of the military institute at Lexington. Saw a very magnificent statue of Washington erected to his honor by the Commonwealth of Virginia. The statue taken down for the purpose of sending it to Washington Rumored in camp that Sheridan had taken Linchburg.
