June, TUESDAY 14, 1864 Got up this morning at 3 1/2 oclock and got in readiness to march. The 1st Brigade took the rear. Some skirmishing along the road. between, the Cavalry who pursued the enemy so sharply that they did not have time to burn all [the?] bridges. Went within 3 miles of the Natural Bridge. When we got to Buchanan we found the bridge over the James to be burned Consequently we crossed in boats and on the ruins of the bridge. After a march of 24 miles over hills through the lots and in the dust we camped on the south-east side of the James near Buchanan. Weather warm. Made coffee at night from water of the James. Rumors in camp that Sheridan had taken Linchburg with 10000 WEDNESDAY 15. Got up this morning at sunrise and went down to the James R R and took a wash. After breakfast received order to be in readiness to march. at the time I write it is 7 minutes past 9 o'clock, and we are in line. About 10 we were on the move and on our way over the blue river by the way of what is called the farm. Camp tonight in the hills. The 8th on picket. When we got to the summit of the ridge we saw a rebel lay by the side of the road supposed to be shot the 14th while in the act of falling trees across the path or Rode. Camped at night near Otter Peak. THURSDAY 16. Left Camp this morning about 7 o'clock and owing to some mistake we got behind time and did not come up with the brigade until 12 o'clock. At 12 o'clock M, we were in Liberty. Found the R R and other public property destroyed. Weather very warm this PM. Camped at night near a brook about 5 miles east of Liberty. The inhabitants of Liberty generaly secesh. Some of the buildings in Liberty.
