Keokuk Aug 6th 1861 Dear Henry it was only day before yesterday that I wrote home but I have had quite un [?] adventure since then and feilt as though some of it would be worth relating early yesterday morning we got news that we were needed at Athens about 25 miles from here up the Desmoines river that the secessionist were about to take the town we swalowed our breakfast as quick as we could and marched down to head quarters and got a musket and cartrige box apiece and got on the cars and fairly flew down there. there was only three companies of us though.. our company the centerville and another company. we were only about three quarters of an hour going up there and we stopt
