he gives them apass. the main use of pickets is to keep the enemy from surprising the town. I got your letter of the 1st.inst last night you wrote as though we were going down the river. for my part I had heard nothing about it before. well there is alittle talk just now about our going down to Kentucky but I guess it is only talk four Companies of our regiment is in Syracuse guarding it the rest of us is guarding Tipton there is no other troops around here now and I dont think they will take us away and leave these places unguarded although I would be willing to go to Kentucky South Carlina or any where else rather than to be lying around doing nothing so long. we have enough to do we are on guard most of time but it dont look as though we were doing anything for the Country they are too careful keep us too far from danger
