as warm as june. well it is getting dark I will have to quit writing pretty soon. we have been running fast and steady to day they have been trying to overtake a fleet of eight or nine boats that started out ahead of us. there was a little excitement on board about ahalf an hour ago caused by the appearance of about thirty [al?] or forty armed cavelrymen standing on the bank close to the water. who they were we could not tell for certain but the supposition was that they were rebels of course. as there was no union troops in that part of the Country, they had no flag but as we got up even with them they stuck up awhite rag and hailed us. they told us to land that they wanted to come on board but we kept going ahead we paid no attention to them our boat has landed to take on some wood but the wood yard hapened to be a lot of staves that has been hauled here for transportation I suppose. but I guess the Captain of the boat thought rebel staves would burn as well as anything else at any rate they are pileing it on. nothing more tonight well Henry this is the 14th.. I expected to have had my letter on its way home before this time but for certain reasons they will will not let us send letters back for afew days and as I am to lazy to write another I will write up a little more now and keep it till I can send it
