only as citizens they would dress themselves as citizens and be with us most of the time. I spent avery good fourth of July down there I was boarding or living with the citizens then. the way it come was our boys showed them but little mercy they helped themselves to fruit and vegetables and everything else that was good to eat they spared neither chicken patches nor potato roasts it was the first time our men ever took anything of importance from either secesh or union folks without paying for what they got. but this was the second time they had been to Holly Springs and to no purpose as quick as our men were away the rebels were back again they have anoyed us considerably in one nights ride They could come up and attack and destroy atrain between here and Memphis and before we could get after them they would be back to their rendeevouz at Holly springs. and the citizens were so saucy to our men that they didnt care what they done. then the citizens came to our officers to claim protection and after the boys
