to Major Smiths house not over a half mile from our Fort and but a little ways from our pickets and took a couple of the Michigan boys that was on guard there, plundered the house of all its valuables and got away, made good their escape before we could get out there. This Smith is Maj of the First Tenn Cavalry in the U. S. Service and stationed at Bolivar he knows the Country around here about as well as old Saulstreet or Street as we call him, or Bob Smith either and is more annoying to them than all the troops in this vicinity because he knows them. They cant hide their guns and pass themselves off for citizens around him. he kills and captures them as fast as they can recruit and they are all the time conscripting. That is one reason they are hanging around here so much they think they can catch him some time at home he had been at home two or three days when they went there that night but that evening he went back to his Regt
