Camp 6th Infantry [Mulery?] Lagrange Tenn May 7th 1863 Dear Sister For the first time in three weeks I have an opportunity of writing a few lines since the middle of April we have done more marching than ever before in the same length of time. We have over run pretty near the whole State of Mississippi meeting but little or no opposition. We lived off of the Country taking everything that was of any benefit to us or the Confederacy. We put an end to farming where ever we went by taking all horses and mules from the plows or wherever else they could be found and we routed all the Confederate forces within a hundred miles south of here. We started on our first expedition on the 17th of April left our Camps and camp equipage taking no teams or provisions except what could be carried in our haver sacks which is about three days rations according to the order we were to be gone from camp perhaps two weeks. it was to be a force
