but perhaps will be kept here till after the fall of Vicksburg. Our army here is in two lines facing in opposite directions one line is close up to the works around Vicksburg and facing it. the other is a few miles out facing east. From the positions of of our lines and the advantges we have over an approaching enemy in this rough Country I think it would take at least half the Confederacy to raise the seige of Vicksburg. We have a sure thing of them I think though we must acknowledge they hold out extremely well. There is still some talk of Johnson's comming to Pemberton's assistance but not so much as there was. I think all but Pemberton himself have given up all hopes of saving Vicksburg or Port Hudson. The talk is and has been for several days that Port Hudson has fallen but we have had no papers lately and in consequence get but little news of any kind except what we are told
