Record of Events Beginning with the month of July 1861 I left Albia Monroe County Iowa in Company with about one hundred other Volunteers from that place under Command of Capt Henry Saunders, 1st Lieut Calvin Kelsey, and 2nd Lieut Leander C. Allison. July 9th 1861. Our place of rendezvous was at Burling Iowa in the fair ground two miles from town where we arrived July 11th our Company being the third Company there. by the fifteenth there was three full Regiments. On the 17th our Regt was sworn into United States Service to serve for three years unless Sooner discharged. our Company E Comp. [Regt. under the command of?] J A McDowell Col Jno M Corse Major. On the 5th of Aug we left Camp Warren--our place of Rendezvous) and went to Keokuk, going by water to Ft. Madison where we took the cars arriving at Keokuk about dark, quartered in [vacant?] houses each Company to itself where we remained during our stay at Keokuk. we had aguarding to do while there. On the 8th day of Aug word came that they were fighting at Athens asmall town on the Desmoines river 26 miles above Keokuk. apart of our Regt was marched to Bridgeport where they [illegible] Springfield ["Harpers Ferry" is written above] muskets acartridge box apeace is two rounds of cartridge each. we then got on the cars and went to Croton double quick, then forded the river to Athens atown of afew houses just across on the Missouri side of the river from Croton. Aparty of rebels under Gen Green had attacked two or three hundred home guards at that place under Col Moore, and were defeated with asmall loss. we were a little too
