we then left Benton Barracks--as we supposed to go down the river we got in aboat and had everything loaded on but in the evening unloaded again and put on the cars. we then got on the cars and went to Jefferson City Mo. where we arrived about noon of the 30th. we went into Camp about two miles South of town our Camp was called Camp Curtis. While there, we were armed and uniformed our arms consisted of Austrian muskets with fuze locks, and were the poorest quality of guns. our uniform was the regular Army Clothing and tolerably good though nothing extra. Our drill was in the manuel of [drills?] and Battalion drill we also learned to do Picket guard duty. Lieut Col Mark Cummins came to the Regt to take his place as Lieut Col. On the fifth of Oct we got one month and ahalf pay. The next morning we left Jefferson City marched west 9 miles. Oct 7th we marched about 17 miles Camped in asmall place called California. The next day we marched about 12 miles Camped in Tipton. On the 11th we marched to Syracuse Morgan County, asmall town 6 miles west of Tipton. we found the 8th Iowa Regt at Syracuse While there, we were reviewed by Secretary Camron and Gen Fremont we were assigned to Gen McKinstrys Division. We exchanged our Austrian muskets for the old Springfield musket. On the 21st we left there and started for Springfield Mo marched about 11 miles. The next day we were delayed three or four hours while Gen Hunters Division passed us. we marched 6 miles Camped in the edge of the Prairie. The next day we marched about 14 miles Camped on Cole Creek near asmall town called Cole Camp. Oct 24th marched about 14 miles Camped within about three miles of
