9 oclock we passed Ft Henry or rather its ruins since its walls had been battered down by our gun boats afew weeks before Ft Henry was built on the east side of the river on alow piece of ground almost as low as the bed of the river. On the 13th we arrived at Savannah Tenn where we found afleet of about 70 boats loaded with Soldiers and supplies there was also two gun boats the Lexington and Tyler. The stars and stripes waved from every boat and the soldiers were in the best of spirits. We lay there two days it rained most of the time, but the weather was warm and vegetation forward the flowers in the gardens in full bloom On the 15th we moved up the river about 20 miles and back during the night to Pittsburg Landing ten or twelve miles above Savannah. On the evening of the 16th we got off the boat and Started reconnoitering, went out about amile and returned to Shore, where we Camped during the night. Next morning went out the Purdy road running west from the Landing went as far as Owl Creek asmall Swampy Creek 4 or five miles from the landing Staid there during the day and night the next morning we went about three miles farther then back to Owl Creek. part of the Regt was then sent to the boat to bring the teams, tents, and and Camp equipages. We fixed our Camp in an old orchard on the hill near the Creek. March 23rd Still in camp on the hill at Owl Creek our Picket Stationed along the Creek. We were Brigaded with the 46th Ohio and 40th Ill First and 5th Ind Battery. Our Col, J. A. Mc Dowal commanding the Brigade Gen. W. T. Sherman the Division. All the troops of the fleet had
