1862 May 9th moved one mile fortified picket fighting on the left became general on the 12th we were paid four months pay 13th moved 2 or three miles forward and fortified about ten oclock that night Co "E" and two other Companies and two peics of artillery were sent forward half mile on picket were stationed on aroad that crossed asmall branch about three hundred yards in advance of us the next morning as soon as it was light the rebel pickets could be seen on the bridge across the stream neither party seemed inclined to fire for an hour or so the rebels then comenced it and we replied but found they were flanking us we fell back a shortdistance were reinforced and held our positions till night were [?] firing was kept up all day in fact every day with the pickets from that till after the evacuation at of Corinth though there was seldom anyone hurt at picket fighting as the distance between the lines was generaly three or four hundred yards & through heavy timber when our whole line was moved forward a Regt from each Brig was sent forward as skirmishers as the enemy kept out aheavy picket the
