skirmishers sometimes had heavy [artillery?] to drive them The 8th [We] lost between thirty and forty killed and wounded on the 17th They were in Col Smiths Division joining ours on the left their positions that day as skirmishers was on the main Corinth and Shiloh road at the Russel House when the rebels were strongly [jousted?] about four miles from Corinth. The enemy loss there however was considerably heavier than ours On the 18th we moved forward amile or two and fortified our Brig being at and near the Russel House the house was torn down the boards used for beds and shelters and to make platforms for the heavy guns the position was again one for artillery and the cannon was placed at short intervals then were four sege guns (92 pounders) each drawn by eight yoke of oxen Then there was one 64 pounds howitzer and one Battery [(Silverspars)?] of 20 pound Parrott guns four in number and two Batteries of six [?] from all the above within aspace of less than two hundred yards
