night. The next morning, Sunday April 19th before starting fired our guns all that were not too wet. We then started west marching as the day before, with skirmishers thrown out each side of the road and in advance of the Column. We could plainly hear the cannonading between Gen Lawman and Gen Chalmers forces on Cold water some thirty miles west of us. But we  suposed it to be in the vicinity of Chulahoma about eight miles distant. When within five miles of Chulahoma our advance--40th Ill--were fired into by a few rebel cavalry on picket at the cross roads at that place, our artillery turned on them fired four shots. Our Boys about ahalf mile behind was sent forward on the double quick. We rather supposed (I at least) that Gen Lawman was driving them toward the Tallehatchie, and as we were on or near that road were cutting off their retreat but soon learned the true state of affairs. nobody hurt
