We had hardly dismounted till word came from the rear that Chalmer with aforce of not less than athousand were right behind. Every fourth man took charge of the horses and led them forward out of the lane and across the Creek The rest of us formed aline double quick with fixed bayonets. We were not prepared to fight avery large force as we had over four hundred extra horses and mules. and it took two or three Companies to guard them and the prisoners Captured at Senatoba. and one fourth of the remainder in Charge of the ones we rode. then eight or ten men from each Company were Sent foraging in the morning. and had not returned nor were not likely to under the circumstances But our position was agood one and we could have stood them ahard little fight as long as they
