On the same day of the surrender our expedition was planned, with general Sherman in command, and put into immediate motion against the Confederate army, gathered by General Johnston and occupying the country between the Big Black River and the City of Jackson. In a note to Sherman dated July 4, 1863 General grant said: "I want you to drive Johnston out in your own way and inflict on the enemy all the punishment you can."
