Memphis Wednesday Oct 29 '62. My Dear wife, we landed last night among other steamboats at the wharf & were recd with cheers from every boat and hundreds of cavalry on shore. There was an ugly looking large gunboat anchored out in the river opposite the city with 12 guns. I could only look out last night but this morning Major Sam. Clark asked me ashore with him & I went & had a stroll till 11 oclock. 1st I went to the principal Hotel with the major & had a cigar, then went out & round to the fortifications back of & round the city. Gen Sherman is in command here with some 20,000. The 6th lowa, 6th Ill. Cavalry & 6th Missouri, some Ohio & Indiana Regts. Sherman says he does not care how soon the rebels try to take the place back for if they do he has his batteries ready to destroy the place & that he will do it. So he told Patterson. He says he could not hold it against the force the rebels might bring but that he can do it. this is the reason they let him alone. This is the bitterest Sesesh city on the river. Where you find one he is bold in avowing it and very bitter at that. The city is (so one told me) about 1/2 & 1/2. I went 1st into a saloon & bought some apples (2 for 5 cts) & cakes and as one greater than I once did, went through the streets eating them
