Helena Ark. Nov. 8 1862 Dear Wife, I did think I would not write until tomorrow, but as I was on guard last night and have no duty to perform this morning I will write now. I am not very well now though not on the sick list. My cough does not leave me and I am afraid. will not. under the exposure incident, we have only 2 in the hospital and they are not very sick. (Lingard & John Saxon). The rest are well except colds. They have been for some days getting out timber to build us cook houses, and today are putting them up. One log house to two messes. We have 4 messes. I am head of Mess No. 2 of 24 men including myself & 2 corporals. (Jo Gollom and Sam. Lewis). Jo Schott & Jenkins are in my mess. Jo Schlash is in Wm. Halls mess, we detail two men per day to cook etc. in them and unless when the men are all out on picket or other duty, the Sargeants & Corporals are not obliged to cook at all. Yesterday I had to as my mess were all out on Picket guard and I had to get dinner for them when they came in and supper also. to let them rest then on guard myself last night and I am tired this morning. Our tents are too small for 5 men Each so small that it really gives one no chance to rest and I am satisfied is not healthy. Then it is sandy where we are and when the wind blows (as it did yesterday) it raises a perfect cloud of dust and sand that fills tents. Eyes, nose, mouth & ear
