it is said the Dr had also his holster pistols. Well in riding through a long lane, they saw 3 mounted men ride into the lane at right angles ahead of them & who turned in the same direction they were going. They spoke together about them, one saying they were farmers, another that they were diggers Still riding up to them, untill the Dr. began to be afraid there was something wrong & checked up. The other two rode on up till within 15 or 20 yards of them. When they wheeled round with carbines levelled at them & halted them, and called to the Dr to come up out at the call He wheeled the other way & run one of them Shot at him and chased him a mile or so, but his horse was too much for the rebel & then he had 50 yards or so the start. Well that is the way the Major & Col. have gone up according to the Drs story. The Col. (Smith) was mad. Said he had warned Clark about being so careless in riding out (as he had been outside the pickets before). He reported to Gen Hovey who said he could do nothing for them as they went on their own risk against & without orders when they did. That he should report to Head Quarters, and they stood a chance of being mustered out of the Service for it. So say the officers who high enough to consort with the Crowned heads. It is a bad fix any how they are in. Nothing more monday. Tuesday was a rainy day. finished our cook house chinked & daubed it & built stick & mud chimneys to it. it holds the feed boxes & utensils for 4 messes who cook in it
