The new Marine Hospital (built just before the war broke out) is the only fine building in it. It is a large fine stone building well situated just above town on the Ark River near where it enters the Miss. Went 30 miles below and landed for the night beside a large plantation. Before 12 o'clock we had burnt a large cotton gin, Some cotton, The large house and some smaller ones, Making quite a bright scenery. And I believe some troops went off and performed the same for some 2 or 3 other plantations, bringing in Chicken, Honey, Meat, etc. & corn blades for fodder for the stock. At 2 P.M. left this landing for the Sunny South again & have just now passed another fine Plantation on the Ark. side when Chimneys are sticking up thick showing where Houses were once. We are on the Hurricane [deck?] on the Ark. side (going down) where I lie in all my glory each night. feel pretty well, as do most of the boys. We left 2 at Helena Alton & J.B. Henry sick. Schlabach sits beside me now on Hurricane roof near the big chimney. he is not very well just now, though nothing serious. Jenkins is well. Schott also. [name?] is well, McAllister better
