I rec'd my detail & orders from Gen'l Grant on the Evening of the 16th to report on board this boat which I did on yesterday. My Post is General Ward Master and a busy place it is. There are some 700 patients on board & of course a good many die daily. The fare is pretty good. I found friends on board who have taken me under their wing (as the saying is) and make me feel quite somebody. Dr. Dewy of Troy is Surgeon with the rank of Major & he with Orange will & can do considerable for me. Then the Steward is an old acquaintance of Orange & Julia's when O. was Practising first in Egypt & was acquainted with Mary. Well I have no news of note. The Co news was the same. No deaths or discharges & the sick were generally better Jo. Sch-- was round out doors. John P. Butter was not very well. The reg. moved up the river a few miles to a better camping ground. There is a movement on the Yazoo where we were before & has been some heavy Cannonading for 2 days & troops moving from here to help them A fight is going on somewhere & I suppose our reg. will be ordered there soon. Dewy says Dr. Lytle & Gorman failed for 60000.00 &
