the "Sunny South" and sauntered some till night going up on the "Williams" again. On Sunny South had a good time joking, talking, etc. (with a little Catawba mixed) with Maj's Hoff and Ludlow and Capt Reno. So you see I assosiate with the big bugs, if I am a Private soldier, well that night I was unwell and have been run with diarrhoea pretty hard since but have it under check a little now again. Walking, or in fact any exertion will start my bowells like smoke. I have kept pretty still since yesterday firing was heard all day at and round Vicksburg, and all last night heavy firing. And now this morning cannonading is heavier than ever. It is reported that we are whipping them & that Grant will be in Vicksburg tonight. We are in a semi Circle round the city on the back side, our right on the Yazoo and our left on the Miss. at Warrenton 4 miles below the city and the firing is going on all round and in front by mortars and gun Boats. I saw Jim Williams the other day. he says he has heard that our regiment got cut up badly again over near Jackson Miss. Jo Schlabach is in Camp here
