A sensitive [coon?] lay sleeping one day the sound of the woodcutter's hatchet was heard so he jumped on a stump to see what [illegible] And thus did he sing, aye, he sung like a bird Woodsman, spare that tree Touch not In youth And Ill protect it now. Hard by, on an oak, sat a sober old owl Fanning himself with the cool western breeze And he wore on his features a horrible scowl As he sung to the zephyrs that float through the trees Blow away ye gentle breeze All among the leaves and trees I'll sit down among the [muses?] There I'll mend my boots and shoeses - A squirrel and possum together there met And shook hands and [kissed?] and most lovingly [clung?] For they vowed years ago they would never forget one another through life so they then struck up and sung Should Auld acquaintance &c A fox jumped out of a thicket and played With his brush for awhile in a transport of glee Then thoughtfully walked to a green forest glade And sat himself down and most sweetly sang he Oft in the stilly night In slumber's chain Fond memory Of nice fat geese around me
