On the 31st of April 1856, at Noon, I took a rowboat with Capt. Mitchell and went aboard the 'City of Brooklyn,' a ship of some 1.500 Tons Am. register, and about 1.800 Eng. The crew consisted of a Captain, Three Mates, a Carpenter, Cook, Steward and twenty six seamen. In the Cabin besides myself were a Scotch Lady (Mrs. McMorine) and her three small children - going to Douglas Castle to visit her Parents, after eight years absence in America. In the Lower Cabin were twenty-nine passengers, of both sexes, all ages, and various nations, returning to the lands of their forefathers. Some merely to visit, Others to pass the remainder of life Soon after coming on board, a Steam tug took us and towed to Sandy Hook. At about 5 P.M. she left us, and we anchored about three miles inside the Bar. Here we remained, owing to an Easterly storm, until Sunday morning, May 4th. Then, a light westerly wind favouring us, we heaved the anchor and set sail. Soon we were over the Bar - which is covered by but 24 feet
