Journal Entry 6

June 2nd  Last evening I saw but the glimmer of lights.  This morning the busy city was clearly exposed to view.  No sooner were we in Waterloo dock than I jumped on shore and went up into the town with my friend the Captain.  After calling on the Consigness (Miss Boult English Co) and presenting a letter of introduction, we visited the Custom House Exchange and American Consulate.  The Custom House is a large and very find building of brown stone.  The Post Office is connected with it.  In front, is a statue of Wm Huskinson, formerly a prominent citizen of Liverpool, and it's representative in the House of Commons.  The Exchange is a very fine building, built around three sides of a large open court, -- the Town Hall occupying the fourth side.  In the centre of the open Court -- where merchants daily congregate on change -- is a large monument to the memory of Lord Nelson.  The Exchange contains a large and handsome reading room, with many files of Papers.
