Another recipe for whitewash Take a clean water tight barrel, or other suitable Cask, and put into it a half a bucket of limes - slake it by pouring boiling water over it, in sufficient quantity to cover it five inches deep, stir it briskly till thoroughly slaked. When this slacking has been effected dissolve it in water and add two pounds of sulphate of Zinc and one of common Salt. These will cause the wash to harden and prevent its cracking. If desirable for having a cream colour, add three pounds of yellow ochre; if desirable to have a pearl or lead colour - by the addition of lamp, vine or ivory black For Fawn colour add four pounds of umber Turkish or American (the American is the cheapest, one pd of indian red and one pound of common lamp black. For stone colour add four pd of raw umber & two pd lam black. This wash may be applied with a common white wash brush and will be found to be much superior, both in appearance and durability to common white wash. (From Boston evening Traveller)
