Tuesday, January 17, 1865. Finished reading Barnaby Rudge today. Reached Cairo soon after 9 P.M. Mr Fitch kindly got our transportation for us. Had a tedious time waiting till after midnight for the train to leave, which Mr Fitch made more pleasant by furnishing us with apples & chestnuts. Sleeping cars full. Have to sit straight up all night Little chance for sleep.
