Monday, April 17, 1865. Tried to write today but did little. Mr W- called on us. Walked with Miss Fowler to see Fords Theatre where the Pres' was shot, and the house where he died The girls out at the Capitol, and trying to form some idea of this City of "magnificent distances." A profound gloom covers everything. Every home is draped every face looks sad. May God be near us in these days of trial.
