Wednesday, April 19, 1865. Started quite early to the White House to see the President lying in state. So great was the crowd that we were more than three hours getting in. I can never forget that pale, cold face. Few passed through that did not weep. God's ways are past finding out. Mrs Cole came to see us & we enjoyed it so much.
