Tuesday, April 25, 1865. A bright beautiful day. Soon after ten we were out on the Chesapeke Bay & by noon had a glimpse of the Atlantic. Were cordially received at Fortress Monroe by the Agent Wandered for an hour along the beach gathering shells. Took the four o clock for Norfolk The Agent was stiff at first but warmed up and took us to the best Hotel. Sorry to learn there was no boat till day after tomorrow. Pleasant season of prayer.
