Green Tomatoes (for pies or sweetmeat) Mrs Harwood 1 Peck sliced, & pared green tomatoes, 5 [pds?] sugar 5 lemons seeded & sliced thin, 1 pint vinegar - Stew until the syrup thickens - Sweet Cantaloupe Pickle (delicious) Gather melons half ripe, scrape out the inside, pare & cut into pieces to suit you - Boil them in Alum water until you can easily pierce them with a straw. wash them out in cold water, & lay them in hot ginger tea all night - wash them out next morning & to 7 lb fruit add 4 lb white sugar 2 thirds of a pint vinegar, some white mustard seed, & some mace & cook until clear - If the vinegar does not make enough syrup add a little more - Somersett Pudding - 4 Eggs - 1 tea cup butter, 1 of cream, 2 of white sugar, 1 sifted pint of flour, 1 tea spoon soda sifted with flour, (also 1 of cream of tartar) Bake as a cake - a cup of currants is an improvement - flour them -
