this is a trial which god doth not always call his faithfull servants to, but they are always to be prepared for it in the purpose and resolution of their minds; this is a certain sign that men have received y word into good ground and are well rooted in their Religion when they are not shaken by these fierce assaults; for many (as our saviour tells us) hear y word & with joy receive it, but haveing not proof in themselves they endure but for a wile & when persecution or tribulation aris-eth because of y word presently they are offered; nap; some when thy see persecution com-ing at a distance wheel off, and bethink themselves of making their retreat in times & of agreeing with their adversary whilst he is yet in the way; so that constancy to our religion in case of danger & suffering for it is y best proof of our sincerity's thus I have confided sincerely as it respects god
