January, Monday 19, 1863. looked through Davenport quite a business place. Bought a [illegible] for our contraband [illegible]. found Mr. Baker and took supper with him. snow storm Tuesday 20. Remained in barracks reading, playing cards & learning the contrabands to Read. We have no duty of any kind to perform Capt Fowler arrived drenched. (thaw & rain) Wednesday 21. Mr. Baker Recd. a letter from David in response to a contraband. I answered it. I read a book the lone star of Cuba A thaw & very muddy
