May, SATURDAY, 16, 1863. Jackson Missippi By order of Gen Sherman all property belonging to the Confederate Government was Destroyed, & our Army started for Vicksburgh & marched 20 miles [of?] 12 oclock, followed by all the colored population SUNDAY, 17. a Battle was fought at Black River Bridge yesterday & this morning. we made forced marches last night & to day to Reinforce. marched 16 miles & Camped at Black River MONDAY, 18. Crossed the River on Ponton and marched 20 miles to Vicksburgh & Camped before the City. Our advance Troops engaged the enemy in Their first line of Breast Works. Very Hot Weather (Vertically over last two entries:-) I have had Dirrohea & flux for some days Back.
