6 Selma Ala Sept 21st 1865 Thursday Reading the Fair Maid of Perth this fore noon. I was Detailed to go with a Squad of men to Collect Cotton for the U.S.Treasury Dept. under orders of E.G. Lee Agent for Dallas Co, Ala. I had nine Teams & a Guard of 10 men, and Crossed the Ala River and proceeded to the Plantation of Dr J. Walker 18 miles from Selma, & Camped for the night. Passed some fine plantations in very beautifull Locations, But they are nearly all held by Widows, young Sons or Daughters, an evidence of the unhealthy nature of the late war on grown Men.
