38 Center Ala Oct 19th 1865 Thursday This Morning at 8 oclock A.M. the Sun began to Show an eclipse which increased Rappidly untill 9 1/2 when the entire Sun was obscured except a circle on its margin which had the appearance of a ring of fire, as the day was a Clear one the onely Difference in Light was a Dim Copper Colored shade on every object. I saw Distinctly one star "Venus" I think about 30(deg) to the right of the Sun, Men Women and Children was out looking at the phenonomen through Smoke dimed glass, which subdued the Suns rays, and made intervening object,s perfectly discernable
