46 Memphis Tenn Jan 8" 1866 Monday I wrote one letter to Father & Mother, Henderson one to Mrs Jane Durno, Ills Capt Reed made a trial to muster as Major, but failed as onely Two field Officers are allowed for a Regt with less men than this minimum number, Consequently I will not muster as Capt. nor Sergt Grannis as Lieut. Cool, Clear pleasant weather. Ed. Abbott and Jas, Henderson Are doing duty as U. S. [detectives?] in the City with orders from the Provost Marshall D. W. L. The 12" Iowa V.V. Infty ordered on duty to day as Guards on Govt. Property, .
