8 Memphis Tenn Wedensday Jan 17" 1866 Lt Col S, G, Vernes has made made aplication for a S.O. for the muster in of Brevet Major D,W.Reed as Major and if granted H J. Grannis Can Muster as 1st Lt I as Capt.and if the order dont come to day, it will be to late as we Muster Out tomorrow to date Jan 20" 1866, by Capt Campbell 8" Iowa V.V. Infty. The Telegram was answered by the Chief Mustering officer of State Dept. to the effect that Capt. Reed cannot muster as Major as 3 field officers are not allowed now.
