135 1861 Dec 7 St Louis Missouri It comenced to rain in the night and continued all day it is the mud -iest place I ever saw the soil being a white clay and the country being flat the rain soaks into the grou -nd and the passing and repassing of Horses and men and Baggage wagons works the clay into a soft morter that makes it very disagreable for foot passengers
