156 1861 Dec 8 Benton Barracks the weather continues mild & warm & the mud is drying up very fast 8 Sunday I wrote a letter to Jane today. I also walked through the St Louis fair ground but the fountains are broken & dried up and the buildings and stalls are ocupied by the Iowa & Michigan Cavalry Reg -ements but the grounds are beautifuly laid out and planted with evergreens
