23 Holly Springs Mississippi August 4th. 1864 Thursday The first mail came through to day from Memphis. I had a letter from Jane to day dated July 21st. Harvest Commenced in Iowa. Hands asking $3.00 per day. Our garden is the best on the Prairie. Mellons & all garden vegetables first rate, in quality and quantity. Troops are moving on south on the R. R.to the Tallahatchie where a Bridge has to be built. e&c. 5 men of our Co. Came out to day from Convalecent Camp. J. Jordan S. Gifford S. [Crossman?] M Elvain & R. Lattimer
