27 Holly Springs Mississippi August 8th 1864 Monday. I wrote a letter to Father & Mother today. The negro troops are going out to the next station Waterford 9 miles. the 3rd brigade is at the Tallahatchie & building a Waggon Bridge over the River under the fire of a Rebel Battery & sharp shooters. 18 miles from Holly Springs &, J. Smith is in command & Moire is Comdg the 1st Division & Col. Shaw the 3rd division of 16th O.C. Gen. Grierson & Hatch are in command of a division of Calviry each. Very Hot weather.
