41 Oxford Mississippi August 22d 1864 Monday We marched to this place Oxford this morning 7 miles from Hurricane Creek. & just as our Divisions advance Reached the place, a Carrier arrived from La Gragauge. with a Dispatch from Washboune stating that Gen Forest has or was about to attack Memphis. and as the Rebel forces were with drawn from our front except some of Chalmers men. We were started back and Reached our camp of last night at dark, a Retrograde movement. And the enemy are cominng on after us,
