42 Hurricane Creek Miss August 23d 1864 Tuesday the Troops commenced moving out long before day towards the Talla Hatchie, our Brigade being train guard. The 3 Division Commenced crossing the River when the Bridge gave way & one 6 mule Team lost. Consequently the Troops Camped and the pioneers went to work Repairing the Bridge. Beaufords Rebel Division Came up & attacked our Rear & was Repulsed by the 2d Brigade of our Division Killing several & taking 16 prisoners. our Brigade were hurried back. But the enemy Retreated. 2 of our foraging Teams were Captured & several straglers
