53 Transport Mattie Miss River Sept 3d 1864 Saturday I wrote a letter to Mrs C.J. Henderson late last night. informing Her of our departure from Memphis & probible destination. The fleet of Boats left Memphis early this morning 8 of them with the 2 & 3 Brigades of 1st Division the 12th Iowa the Rear guard of the fleet, on Stern wheel Boat Mattie. Private John Burn of Co. D 12th. Iowa was Dishonerably Discharged the service for Cowerdice at Battle of Tupelo & other Battles, the only Case in the History of Regt (Vertically, from bottom left:-) I wrote a letter to Mother to day & mailed it at Mouth of White River
